In the interests of justice, a Lay Advocate is someone permitted by the court to serve as an advocate on behalf of a litigant in person. Lay Advocates are given a discretionary Right Of Audience to cross-examine witnesses and address the court on behalf of the litigant.
Lay Advocates often benefit litigants by their ability to present cases as clearly, succinctly and rationally as possible. This often provides great peace of mind to litigants in person and frequently makes the decision to represent yourself an empowering experience.
